Jafar by AEmiliusLives Jafar by AEmiliusLives
Finally, the second deviation in my collection of Disney Villains: Jafar, The Royal Vizier from 1992's classic animated feature "Aladdin".

I began working on this guy a whole year ago! So I decided it was finally Jafar's hour :D I started sculpting him in january 2013, then I went on vacation and when I returned I didn't know what to do with him. Only in april I resumed work on him, but didn't do much really. Only in july I made a significant progress and then became afraid to ruin it, so I abandoned him again :XD: I know... At least I could sculpt his staff and Iago in the meantime, and I also began working in many other villains. So stay tuned :) It won't be a whole year again until my next villain.

Once again, it's a rather simple sculpt, it shouldn't have taken me a whole year to get here. I approached it as if I was sculpting a toy or a figurine, trying to remain true to the original design but with a little thing of my own there too. It was made in Sculptris, rendered in Keyshot and finished in Photoshop.

Awesome stuff! Jafar was based off of a historical traitor of the empire (he had the same name), assisting the invaders and gained ruling power after the enemy won.

Yeah! A finished deviation! :D

This really came out nicely. Jafar's face and costume look great but I think what really puts it over the top are the details you included. The depth in the jewel in his hat plus the attention to Iago and the staff are really impressive.

Any idea which villain may be finished next?

Yay, I finished something! :dummy: Lol.

Thank you. I think in a way it payed off for me to take all this time to continue this series. I think I've learnt a lot since my Maleficent and I've raised my own bar now. I've improved my modelling and I'm even using a better, more realistic renderer. If you saw the video, you can even see my actual progress in it. The Jafar you see around 0:40 was what it looked like last July, and THAT going to be my final sculpt! :O It was atrocious! I see it now :XD: Same with Iago and the staff: what's now seen as one of the steps in the progress was, once upon a time, going to be the final thing! :XD:

As for the next one, I'm not really sure. It's coming, hopefully, a month after Jafar: on February 28. I think it's not going to be Lady Tremaine nor Hades, the only other 2 villains I've (officially) "teased" with WIP renders. It might be... the one you saw in my stash (wow, I went to see it and turns out I uploaded it on January 28, 2013 :O What are the odds? That officially ratifies the 28th as "villain day"!). Or it might be someone else. I don't know if I should sort this in some special way? I did a classic villain, then a Disney-renaissance one, next should be a classic again? Or, with another criteria: I started with a female, now a male, next should be a female again? :P A classic-female sounds like it's Lady Tremaine's turn. But then when will I introduce a renaissance-female? Am I overthinking it? I've no idea. Lol.

Again, pardon the yapping and thank you for the comment and +fav =)

You got new software? That's awesome. Was it much to get used to or was it just an updated version of what you already had for rendering? And I know what you mean about seeing old stuff you were once happy with and now thinking that it looks downright embarrassing. Maybe it would make for a good draw-this-again meme.

I was wondering about the one you showed me in your Stash! I was going to mention it along side Tremaine and Hades but thought better of it since you haven't posted any of it publicly.

Ever thought about Ursula for a renaissance-era female render? I remember the Vanessa animation you did a while back was pretty cool.

PS: In all my yapping I forgot to say I'd actually like to do a draw-this-again meme with a Jafar I made in the pleistocene with MS Paint and one of these new renders :giggle: Even though I didn't exactly 'draw' the new Jafar.

Thinking about it I realized at some point I exported it and colored it in Paint, but I originally made it in black and white in something even more basic and archaic, a DOS based thing called Print Magic :P

Keyshot is relatively easy to use and user friendly :) I'm not too happy with how it deals with some things, but I'm trying to supplement that with other softwares. I'm still doing the actual 3d sculpting in Sculptris, plus some sort of hard surface modeling in my dear old trueSpace (which I used for rendering until Keyshot came along). Jafar's turban gem, for example, was done in trueSpace because it's the kind of thing that has to be done as precise geometry. While I was sculpting Jafar I used a little modified sphere as a placeholder, but it looked like it had melt or something :P the final thing had to be precise. So Keyshot comes in the last part of the process, its best feature is the materials and the realistic finishing. Jafar skin has a natural translucence I couldn't have given it with trueSpace, then there's the black velvet, the silk, the metals. I think the materials look fantastic even when I underplayed it all a bit. Keyshot can even be a bit too realistic, I included a dozen test renders in the video, and initially it was looking like either a figurine with wax skin or some actual physical thing. I thought Jafar shouldn't look too realistic or, on top of being plain weird, he'd look too different to Maleficent.

I'll note you the rest of the answer. Like I didn't yap enough already

That's fascinating that you use multiple programs for different parts and then piece it together. This is probably a really stupid question, but how do you assemble the parts into one finished piece when they were made in different programs? Is it like using Photoshop to do a photo-manipulation where there are multiple parts but they're all jpegs?

Actually in 3D it's relatively unavoidable to use multiple softwares. Even when I was doing all the traditional modelling and rendering within trueSpace, I'd work on the textures in Photoshop, and make some post to the finished renders there as well. I find that, though I'm far from that myself, most 3D 'completists' (people who design, model, finish, rig and animate in 3D) tend to work in a variety of different softwares and they use the best features of each for different parts of the process. And developers know this, because they're always releasing patches, plugins and exporters that allow this multiplatform portability and compatibility. And even some softwares allow plugins made by other companies to work in their own environment, there's from small plugin tools to fullblown on and offline renderers.

In my case, I don't leave the 'blanks' empty. As in the case of Jafar's jewel, I make some sort of placeholder to see the overall effect of the piece, then I modeled the gem in truespace and exported it to Keyshot where I removed the placeholder and assembled it all together with the Sculptris model, gave it all its textures and finishing. That part was indeed a bit like photo-manipulation. It was a bit tricky because I don't really like how Keyshot handles moving, rotating and resizing objects in its environment, and putting Jafar's gem in place implied all of that. Keyshot is accessible and it gives you a neat finishing, but they still need to improve many things and they know it. I hope I'll be able to teach myself how to properly use zBrush and Maya in the future, for the time being I'm relatively satisfied with my progress =)

It is possible, but initially I'll focus on villains from the classic and renaissance Disney features, and not so much on the latest ones. Then Hans in particular is an unusual villain, he's not introduced as one in the movie, and only later he surprises us all. Even in trailers, publicity stills and posters he isn't rendered as a villain. So I guess I'm saying I don't know how to deal with that :P I feel like respecting and not contradicting the Frozen 'marketing'. Putting a 'villain' tag on him and having him next to Jafar and Maleficent wouldn't feel right in a way, am I making any sense? :XD:
Then again I might still do a Frozen piece at some point, but as something set apart from the 'villains collection' :)
